1. LAKE VICTORIA PORTS Lake Victoria has six main ports and various cluster ports. Structurally these ports report to the Branch manager's office in Mwanza. The ports are as follows: 1.1 Mwanza North Port. The port is strategically located within Mwanza City and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 150,000 passenger and 20,000 tons of cargo per annum. It has quay length of about 100 meters with capacity to berth two vessels and a ramp for landing crafts. The port has a railway siding and is fenced. Other servicesPrivate ports Within the radius of the port area there is a number of privately owned ports. These ports include the Kamanga Ferry which is owned and managed by a private company. 1.2 Mwanza South Port The port is located in the southern side of the Mwanza city and has specialized facilities for cargo handling and ship repairs. The port handles local and transit cargo to Kemondo Bay, Musoma Port Bell in Uganda, and Kisumu in Kenya. The terminal has a quay length of about 247 meters and an area of approximately 43,000m2. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time and has one link span for ferry wagons. The port has a capacity to handle 500,000 tons annually. The port surface is all gravel and unpaved. Other services Mwanza Oil Jetty The Oil Jetty is privately owned – operated by oil company (GAPCO).1.3 Nansio Port It is a small port in Ukerewe Island, specialized for passengers and parcels. The pier was constructed in 1950’s. The port handles an average of about 90,312 passengers and 1,200 tons of cargo per annum. It has a pier with length of about 80 meters, 8 meters depth and capacity to berth two ships and a ramp for landing craft vessels. Other facilities at the port include:

1.4 Bukoba Port The port is located about two kilometers from Bukoba town centre and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 135,000 passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo per annum. It has a quay length of about 100 meters, depth of 3 meters and a ramp for landing crafts. 1.5 Kemondo Bay Port The port is located about 30 km from Bukoba Town and is most modern port in the whole lake. The port was built to serve the countries of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda under East Africa Community initiatives in 1977. The terminal handles an average of about 15,000 passengers and 35,000 tons of cargo per annum. The depth of the bay is 5 meters, quay length of about 100 meters and a link span for wagon ferries. The port used to handle cargo from Kisumu but at the moment is idle. The terminal handles an average of about 1,800 tons of cargo per annum. Portion of the port is fenced. There is an oil jetty which is now operated by GAPCO. Other services 1.7 Lake Victoria – Cluster ports 1.7.1 Kinesi The port has finger jetty. 1.7.2 Shirati (Sota) The pier is in good condition. It has steel rail piles with timber deck. The port has a goods shed of 2,400 cubit meters. 1.7.3 Nyamirembe Have a concrete pier and two residential houses 1.7.4 Chato Has a concrete pier 1.7.5 Buchezi Has one goods shed 1.7.6 Bukondo The port has pier 1.7.7 Nungwe bay 1.7.8 Others Other cluster/calling ports include KAHUNDA, Maisome, Kome Ntama, Kome Mchangani, Lushamba, Irigamba, Luhama, Maharamba and Itabagumba. These points have not been developed. 2. LAKE TANGANYIKA PORTS 2.1
Kigoma Port
(Cargo Terminal) The port is strategically located within Kigoma town and is specialized for transit cargo for Conto and Burundi. Depth at quay is 3 meter and quay length of about 301 meters and with capacity to berth 3 big vessels of the size plying in Lake Tanganyika. The terminal has designed capacity to handle 500,000 tons but currently handles an average of about 200,000 tons of cargo per annum. Other facilities at the port include:

The port is located close to Kigoma town centre and is specialized for passenger and parcels. It also has facility to ship repairs. The terminal has a quay length of about 100 meters and depth of 3 meter. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time. The port handles 15,000 passengers and 5,000 tones per annum. Other services 2.3 Kigoma Oil Jetty The jetty is located at Kibirizi. It caters for transit petroleum products to Burundi and Congo. It has capacity to berth two vessels. 2.4 Private Ports in Kigoma There are various private ports located in Ujiji and Kibirizi. 2.5 Kasanga Port The port is strategically located on the south eastern side of Lake Tanganyika and is specialized for transshipped cargo to Burundi, Rwanda and Mpulungu port in Zambia. The port has depth estimated at 4.5m and goes up to 9.0m during rain season. All vessels plying the lake can berth at this port. The port area has the following buildings/facilities:
2.6 Lake Tanganyika Cluster Ports The following cluster ports are not developed and there are no any infrastructure. The vessels anchor at about 1 – 2 nautical miles from ashore.
These ports have significant importance to the people living in these areas as the lake provides the only means of transport. 3. LAKE NYASA PORTS 3.1 Itungi port The port is located about 250 km from Mbeya Municipality/town and 14km from Kyela town. The port operates as a branch office for Lake Nyasa ports serving about 13 points along the lake. The port covers an area of about 1½ sq. km. The maximum draught at the quay is 3 meters. The port area has the workshop building – 300 sq. m., 1 passenger shed and generator house. Other services 3.2 Mbamba Bay port The port is located about 170 km from Songea regional town and 70 km from Mbinga district town. The port covers an area of about 1.265 ha. Other Services 3.3 Liuli Port The port is located about 34 km from Mbamba Bay port. The port area has 1 building used as port office and one room is set aside as goods shed/store.3.4 Manda Port The port is located about 275 km from Rudewa District town. The port has 1 building used as port office and one room is set aside as goods shed/store. Other services 3.5 Lake Nyasa Cluster ports The following ports are not developed and there are no any infrastructure, the vessels anchor at distance from ashore:
