1.  LAKE VICTORIA PORTS

Lake Victoria has six main ports and various cluster ports. Structurally these ports report to the Branch manager's office in Mwanza. The ports are as follows:

1.1  Mwanza North Port.

The port is strategically located within Mwanza City and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 150,000 passenger and 20,000 tons of cargo per annum.

It has quay length of about 100 meters with capacity to berth two vessels and a ramp for landing crafts.

Other facilities at the port include:

  • One goods shed – with capacity of 4000 cubic meters
  • A building used for ticketing, cargo shed and facilitators (customs, health)
  • Passenger facility – two waiting lounges for lower class and upper class with capacity to accommodate 1,300 passengers
  • 4 fuel storage tanks with capacity of 54,000 litres each
  • A three storey building (former MSC HQ building).

The port has a railway siding and is fenced.

  • Provision for tap water exists
  • The port has electricity from TANESCO
  • Radio communications exists, both HF and VHF
  • Telephone network exists.

Private ports

Within the radius of the port area there is a number of privately owned ports. These ports include the Kamanga Ferry which is owned and managed by a private company.

1.2  Mwanza South Port

The port is located in the southern side of the Mwanza city and has specialized facilities for cargo handling and ship repairs. The port handles local and transit cargo to Kemondo Bay, Musoma Port Bell in Uganda, and Kisumu in Kenya.

The terminal has a quay length of about 247 meters and an area of approximately 43,000m2. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time and has one link span for ferry wagons. The port has a capacity to handle 500,000 tons annually.

The port surface is all gravel and unpaved.

The following facilities are available in the port:-

  1. One link span for attending Ro-Ro wagons ferries;
  2. 2 Floating docks
    • Dock No. 1 with dimension of 14M x 60M
    • Dock No. II with dimension of 19M x 110M
  3. Three (3) office buildings and one dispensary
  4. Shipyard workshop (electrical, welding, diesel shop, machine shop, electronics etc.) and one garage
  5. 10 railway sidings
  6. 6 cranes including 2 portal cranes, (5 tons and 3 tons) and 2 forklifts
  7. Three good sheds with 24,000 cubic meters capacity. One of the shed has been converted into a marine workshop
  8. One godown (with a storage capacity of approximately 10,000 tons)
  9. One big warehouse (supplies shed)
  10. Motor ramp – TRC used to offload/load their cargo.

The port is fenced by chain link material.

Mwanza Oil Jetty

The Oil Jetty is privately owned – operated by oil company (GAPCO).

1.3  Nansio Port

It is a small port in Ukerewe Island, specialized for passengers and parcels. The pier was constructed in 1950’s. The port handles an average of about 90,312 passengers and 1,200 tons of cargo per annum.

It has a pier with length of about 80 meters, 8 meters depth and capacity to berth two ships and a ramp for landing craft vessels.

Other facilities at the port include:

  • Good shed with 2,400 cubic meters capacity
  • Port office and booking office with passenger lounge
  • Two residential buildings.

Small portion of the port is fenced.

There is a private owned port close to the port area, providing both passenger and cargo services.

  • Radio communication both HF and VHF
  • TTCL telephone network.

1.4  Bukoba Port

The port is located about two kilometers from Bukoba town centre and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 135,000 passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo per annum.

It has a quay length of about 100 meters, depth of 3 meters and a ramp for landing crafts.

  • Three good sheds with a capacity of 12,000 cubit meter
  • Port building office and booking office
  • Passenger waiting shelter
  • Oil Jetty
  • 11 blocks residential buildings for staff

1.5   Kemondo Bay Port

The port is located about 30 km from Bukoba Town and is most modern port in the whole lake. The port was built to serve the countries of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda under East Africa Community initiatives in 1977.

The terminal handles an average of about 15,000 passengers and 35,000 tons of cargo per annum.

The depth of the bay is 5 meters, quay length of about 100 meters and a link span for wagon ferries.

Other facilities at the port include

  • Six warehouse with a total capacity of 24,000 cubic meters
  • 1 Link span for wagon ferries
  • Passenger terminal building with capacity of 1,200 passengers
  • Ramp for RoRo vessels
  • Two buildings

1.6 Musoma Port

The port is located within Musoma town and is a modern port specialized for passenger and cargo. The port used to handle cargo from Kisumu but at the moment is idle.

The terminal handles an average of about 1,800 tons of cargo per annum.

The depth of the bay is 5 meters, quay length of about 100 meters and a link span for wagon ferries.

Other facilities at the port include:

  • Goods shed with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters
  • Two shelters for passenger waiting and customs examination
  • Port office building and booking office.

Portion of the port is fenced.

There is an oil jetty which is now operated by GAPCO.

  • 2 flood lights towers.

1.7 Lake Victoria – Cluster ports

     1.7.1 Kinesi

              The port has finger jetty.

      1.7.2 Shirati (Sota)

              The pier is in good condition. It has steel rail piles with timber deck. The port has a goods shed of 2,400 cubit meters.

      1.7.3 Nyamirembe

              Have a concrete pier and two residential houses

     1.7.4 Chato

             Has a concrete pier

     1.7.5 Buchezi

             Has one goods shed

     1.7.6 Bukondo

             The port has pier

     1.7.7 Nungwe bay

     1.7.8 Others

           Other cluster/calling ports include KAHUNDA, Maisome, Kome Ntama, Kome Mchangani, Lushamba, Irigamba, Luhama,               Maharamba and Itabagumba. These points have not been developed.

 2. LAKE TANGANYIKA PORTS

2.1 Kigoma Port (Cargo Terminal)
 

The port is strategically located within Kigoma town and is specialized for transit cargo for Conto and Burundi. Depth at quay is 3 meter and quay length of about 301 meters and with capacity to berth 3 big vessels of the size plying in Lake Tanganyika. The terminal has designed capacity to handle 500,000 tons but currently handles an average of about 200,000 tons of cargo per annum.

Other facilities at the port include:

  • Container terminal area 3.745sqm
  • Open space for staking containers 10,000sq. meter
  • Two warehouses
  • Three portal cranes of 3 tons each and one container gantry crane with capacity to handle 35 tons
  • Main office (two storey building)
  • Immigration and Customs building
  • 2 mobile cranes and fork lifts
  • 1 Reach Stacker

The port has a railway siding and is well fenced.

  • Provision to tap water exists
  • The port has electricity from TANESCO. There is a standby generator
  • Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF
  • Telephone network exists.


2.2 Kigoma Port Marine (Passenger Terminal)

The port is located close to Kigoma town centre and is specialized for passenger and parcels. It also has facility to ship repairs. The terminal has a quay length of about 100 meters and depth of 3 meter. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time. The port handles 15,000 passengers and 5,000 tones per annum.

The port area has the following building/facilities:

  • A Slipway – 80 meters width and 3 meters depth
  • Office building
  • Various workshops for ship repair, open space for stacking loose cargo and one waiting shelter for passengers.

  • Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF
  • Telephone network exists.

2.3 Kigoma Oil Jetty

The jetty is located at Kibirizi. It caters for transit petroleum products to Burundi and Congo. It has capacity to berth two vessels.

2.4 Private Ports in Kigoma

There are various private ports located in Ujiji and Kibirizi.

2.5 Kasanga Port

The port is strategically located on the south eastern side of Lake Tanganyika and is specialized for transshipped cargo to Burundi, Rwanda and Mpulungu port in Zambia. The port has depth estimated at 4.5m and goes up to 9.0m during rain season. All vessels plying the lake can berth at this port. The port area has the following buildings/facilities:

  • A pier with capacity to berth one ship
  • 3 godowns – 1 transit shed – on the jetty floor limited weight – 200 tons capacity – normally used 24 hours before loading to the ship and one with 750 ton capacity
  • 1 fork lift – 5 tons capacity, 2 tractors with trailers
  • 2 slides (cherezo)
  • 1 office building
  • 5 generators which provide power to the entire area.

2.6 Lake Tanganyika Cluster Ports

The following cluster ports are not developed and there are no any infrastructure. The vessels anchor at about 1 – 2 nautical miles from ashore.

    3. Hrembe
    4. Kaperaresenga
    5. Logosa
    6. Kibweza
    7. Kalya
    8. Likola
    9. Karema
    10. Kabwe
    11. Kirando (Rukwa)
    12. Kipili
    13. Ninde
    14. Msamba
    15. Wampembe
    16. Kala
    17. Kagunga
    18. Mwamgongo
    19. Mtanga

These ports have significant importance to the people living in these areas as the lake provides the only means of transport.

3.  LAKE NYASA PORTS

3.1 Itungi port

The port is located about 250 km from Mbeya Municipality/town and 14km from Kyela town. The port operates as a branch office for Lake Nyasa ports serving about 13 points along the lake. The port covers an area of about 1½ sq. km. The maximum draught at the quay is 3 meters. The port area has the workshop building – 300 sq. m., 1 passenger shed and generator house.

  • Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF use solar power.

3.2 Mbamba Bay port

The port is located about 170 km from Songea regional town and 70 km from Mbinga district town. The port covers an area of about 1.265 ha.

3.3 Liuli Port

The port is located about 34 km from Mbamba Bay port. The port area has 1 building used as port office and one room is set aside as goods shed/store.

3.4 Manda Port

The port is located about 275 km from Rudewa District town. The port has 1 building used as port office and one room is set aside as goods shed/store.

  • Radio communication both HF and VHF exists use solar power.

3.5 Lake Nyasa Cluster ports

The following ports are not developed and there are no any infrastructure, the vessels anchor at distance from ashore:

    1. Matema
    2. Lundu
    3. Lumbili
    4. Itungu
    5. Lupingu
    6. Njambe
    7. Nkili
    8. Ndumbe
    9. Makonde
