1. LAKE VICTORIA PORTS
Lake Victoria has six main ports and various cluster ports. Structurally these ports report to the Branch manager's office in Mwanza. The ports are as follows: 1.1 Mwanza North Port. The port is strategically located within Mwanza City and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 150,000 passenger and 20,000 tons of cargo per annum. It has quay length of about 100 meters with capacity to berth two vessels and a ramp for landing crafts. Other facilities at the port include: One goods shed – with capacity of 4000 cubic meters A building used for ticketing, cargo shed and facilitators (customs, health) Passenger facility – two waiting lounges for lower class and upper class with capacity to accommodate 1,300 passengers 4 fuel storage tanks with capacity of 54,000 litres each A three storey building (former MSC HQ building). The port has a railway siding and is fenced. Other services Provision for tap water exists The port has electricity from TANESCO Radio communications exists, both HF and VHF Telephone network exists. Private ports Within the radius of the port area there is a number of privately owned ports. These ports include the Kamanga Ferry which is owned and managed by a private company.
1.2 Mwanza South Port The port is located in the southern side of the Mwanza city and has specialized facilities for cargo handling and ship repairs. The port handles local and transit cargo to Kemondo Bay, Musoma Port Bell in Uganda, and Kisumu in Kenya. The terminal has a quay length of about 247 meters and an area of approximately 43,000m2. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time and has one link span for ferry wagons. The port has a capacity to handle 500,000 tons annually. The port surface is all gravel and unpaved. The following facilities are available in the port:- One link span for attending Ro-Ro wagons ferries; 2 Floating docks Dock No. 1 with dimension of 14M x 60M Dock No. II with dimension of 19M x 110M Three (3) office buildings and one dispensary Shipyard workshop (electrical, welding, diesel shop, machine shop, electronics etc.) and one garage 10 railway sidings 6 cranes including 2 portal cranes, (5 tons and 3 tons) and 2 forklifts Three good sheds with 24,000 cubic meters capacity. One of the shed has been converted into a marine workshop One godown (with a storage capacity of approximately 10,000 tons) One big warehouse (supplies shed) Motor ramp – TRC used to offload/load their cargo. The port is fenced by chain link material. Other services Provision for tap water exists The port has electricity from TANESCO Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF Telephone network exists. Mwanza Oil Jetty The Oil Jetty is privately owned – operated by oil company (GAPCO). 1.3 Nansio Port It is a small port in Ukerewe Island, specialized for passengers and parcels. The pier was constructed in 1950’s. The port handles an average of about 90,312 passengers and 1,200 tons of cargo per annum. It has a pier with length of about 80 meters, 8 meters depth and capacity to berth two ships and a ramp for landing craft vessels. Other facilities at the port include: Good shed with 2,400 cubic meters capacity Port office and booking office with passenger lounge Two residential buildings. Small portion of the port is fenced. There is a private owned port close to the port area, providing both passenger and cargo services. Other services Radio communication both HF and VHF TTCL telephone network.
1.4 Bukoba Port The port is located about two kilometers from Bukoba town centre and is specialized for passengers and parcels. The terminal handles an average of about 135,000 passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo per annum. It has a quay length of about 100 meters, depth of 3 meters and a ramp for landing crafts. Kemondo Bay Port The port is located about 30 km from Bukoba Town and is most modern port in the whole lake. The port was built to serve the countries of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda under East Africa Community initiatives in 1977. The terminal handles an average of about 15,000 passengers and 35,000 tons of cargo per annum. The depth of the bay is 5 meters, quay length of about 100 meters and a link span for wagon ferries. Other facilities at the port include Six warehouse with a total capacity of 24,000 cubic meters 1 Link span for wagon ferries Passenger terminal building with capacity of 1,200 passengers Ramp for RoRo vessels Two buildings A Portion of the port is fenced. Other services Provision for tap water exists and is reliable The port has electricity from TANESCO Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF Telephone network exists. The port is located within Musoma town and is a modern port specialized for passenger and cargo. The port used to handle cargo from Kisumu but at the moment is idle. 1.6 Musoma Port The terminal handles an average of about 1,800 tons of cargo per annum. The depth of the bay is 5 meters, quay length of about 100 meters and a link span for wagon ferries. Other facilities at the port include: Goods shed with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters Two shelters for passenger waiting and customs examination Port office building and booking office. Portion of the port is fenced. There is an oil jetty which is now operated by GAPCO. Lake Victoria – Cluster ports 1.7.1 Kinesi The port has finger jetty. 1.7.2 Shirati (Sota) The pier is in good condition. It has steel rail piles with timber deck. The port has a goods shed of 2,400 cubit meters. 1.7.3 Nyamirembe Have a concrete pier and two residential houses 1.7.4 Chato Has a concrete pier 1.7.5 Buchezi Has one goods shed 1.7.6 Bukondo The port has pier 1.7.7 Nungwe bay 1.7.8 Others Other cluster/calling ports include KAHUNDA, Maisome, Kome Ntama, Kome Mchangani, Lushamba, Irigamba, Luhama, Maharamba and Itabagumba. These points have not been developed.
