2. LAKE TANGANYIKA PORTS 2.1 Kigoma Port (Cargo Terminal) The port is strategically located within Kigoma town and is specialized for transit cargo for Conto and Burundi. Depth at quay is 3 meter and quay length of about 301 meters and with capacity to berth 3 big vessels of the size plying in Lake Tanganyika. The terminal has designed capacity to handle 500,000 tons but currently handles an average of about 200,000 tons of cargo per annum. Other facilities at the port include: Container terminal area 3.745sqm Open space for staking containers 10,000sq. meter Two warehouses Three portal cranes of 3 tons each and one container gantry crane with capacity to handle 35 tons Main office (two storey building) Immigration and Customs building 2 mobile cranes and fork lifts 1 Reach Stacker The port has a railway siding and is well fenced.
Other services Provision to tap water exists The port has electricity from TANESCO. There is a standby generator Radio communication exists, both HF and VHF Telephone network exists.
The port is located close to Kigoma town centre and is specialized for passenger and parcels. It also has facility to ship repairs. The terminal has a quay length of about 100 meters and depth of 3 meter. The quay can berth 3 vessels at a time. The port handles 15,000 passengers and 5,000 tones per annum. The port area has the following building/facilities: A Slipway – 80 meters width and 3 meters depth Office building Various workshops for ship repair, open space for stacking loose cargo and one waiting shelter for passengers.

2.3 Kigoma Oil Jetty The jetty is located at Kibirizi. It caters for transit petroleum products to Burundi and Congo. It has capacity to berth two vessels.
2.4 Private Ports in Kigoma There are various private ports located in Ujiji and Kibirizi.
2.5 Kasanga Port The port is strategically located on the south eastern side of Lake Tanganyika and is specialized for transshipped cargo to Burundi, Rwanda and Mpulungu port in Zambia. The port has depth estimated at 4.5m and goes up to 9.0m during rain season. All vessels plying the lake can berth at this port. The port area has the following buildings/facilities: A pier with capacity to berth one ship 3 godowns – 1 transit shed – on the jetty floor limited weight – 200 tons capacity – normally used 24 hours before loading to the ship and one with 750 ton capacity 1 fork lift – 5 tons capacity, 2 tractors with trailers 2 slides (cherezo) 1 office building 5 generators which provide power to the entire area.
2.6 Lake Tanganyika Cluster Ports The following cluster ports are not developed and there are no any infrastructure. The vessels anchor at about 1 – 2 nautical miles from ashore. Kirando (Tongwe) Sigunda Hrembe Kaperaresenga Logosa Kibweza Kalya Likola Karema Kabwe Kirando (Rukwa) Kipili Ninde Msamba Wampembe Kala Kagunga Mwamgongo Mtanga These ports have significant importance to the people living in these areas as the lake provides the only means of transport. |
