Business picks up at Dar port

Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) Statistics indicates that the importation of motor vehicles through the port of Dar es Salaam doubled between July last year and February this year.

The port handled 83,440 imported units during the period in review up from 55,819 handled during a similar period in 2011/12. The remarkable performance is a result of the TPA investing heftily in cargo-handling equipment and human resource traning, acting Corporate Communications Manager, Janeth Ruzangi observed.

Bagamoyo Port a lifelong investment, says Membe

The Goverment has reiterated its stance on the project to construct the port of Bagamoyo estimated to cost over US$ 10 billion. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Hon. Bernad Membe is quoted recently as saying the goverment is there to ensure that there is no way it could waste this opportunity availed by the Chinese Goverment.

The commendations were proclaimed in Rome Italy as the Prime Minister, Hon. Mizengo Pinda held a separate sessions with heads of the World Food Program (WFP), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Executive Director of WFP, Ms. Ertharin Cousin assured the premier that her organisation would continue to use the port of Dar es Salaam to transport consignments of food to countries facing shortage of food.

Dar es Salaam Port export volume has increased by about $1 billion in value. Traditional exports increase to $ 774.6m from $681.9m.


Mtwara Set to Become Economic Powerhouse

Mtwara is hastily becoming Tanzania's economic powerhouse is no longer debatable. The question today is how well prepared are Mtwarans to not only adapt to but also benefit from the fast economic changes in the southern region.

Speaking at the Regional Consultative Council (RCC), Mtwara Regional Commissioner Joseph Simbakalia challenged the southerners to prepare for the sweeping economic changes by investing in their children's education. "We have to seriously take our children to school to fully enjoy the fruits of the coming social and economic development," said Mr Simbakalia who also chaired the RCC.

Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Acting Director General Madeni Kipande told the RCC that the first phase of the port improvement has started with construction of four berths and expansion of the supply base for oil and gas exploration activities.


Police to Strengthen Security at Dar Port

Police have formed a ten member task force to strengthen security at the Dar es Salaam Port following the theft of copper ingots and oil in the area last Saturday. Briefing journalists yesterday Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Suleiman Kova said 14 people were now under arrest following the two incidents in which 19 ingots of copper, 360 litres of petrol and 60 litres of diesel were stolen.
