For many customers, the Port of Dar es Salaam is the main link with other countries worldwide and the gateway to the World. TPA ports have the capacity and ability to transport any cargo (general cargo, container cargo and oil cargo).

All product types can be safely and quickly transported to and from any East African hinterland. This is mainly due to the quality road transport and mostly secured oil pipeline which enabled all cargos to get to their final destination efficiently and on time.

MODERN PORT

TPA’s and our key stakeholders (TICTS, ICD’s and CFS’S) together we continue to invest in the most modern technology, more storage areas and state-of-the-art equipment’s to load and discharge goods as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are fully automated equipment’s and our terminals have unmanned cranes that load and discharge containers effectively. We can discharge or load cargos in all weather conditions through our ready available terminals and sheds across the country.

SUFFICIENT CAPACITY

TPA ports across the country have plenty of handling capacity, equipment’s and use advance technology. Overall cargo handled for the period ending June 2016 registered a total of 15.536 million metric tons. On arrival in our ports (Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara), vessels are able to discharge their cargo immediately to make sure it hits the shops on time.

Imports continued to dominate the market, accounting for 81% of the total cargo traffic handled up from 80.5% in 2014/15 while exports accounted for 15.8%. On the other hand, transshipments went up by 10% by 2015/16. Container traffic handled in sea ports was 651,117 TEUs. Transit cargo traffic recorded an increase by 2% registering 4.830 million metric tons in 2015/16 up from 4.732 million metric tons handled in 2014/15. Zambia, our biggest transit market increased its usage of the port of Dar es salaam. In 2015/16, Zambia cargo went up by 5.3% registering 1.810 million metric tons in 2015/16 down from 1.719 million metric tons in 2014/15.

Dar es Salaam port continued to dominate the market share by handling 14.276 million metric tons which is equivalent to 91.9% of the total cargo traffic. Tanga port handled a total of 0.676 million metric tons or 4% of total cargo and Mtwara port handled a total of 0.272 million metric tons or 1.8% of the total cargo. Smaller sea ports of Kilwa, Lindi and Mafia handled a total of 0.046 million metric tons or 0.16% of total cargo. Lake ports (Mwanza, Kigoma and Kyela) on the other hand handled 0.263 million metric tons, or 1.7% of total cargo.
