General
Dar es Salaam port handled a total of 7,642,825 tons of
cargo, of which 76% were imports and 16.8% exports. Transshipment cargo
accounted for 7.2 % of the total cargo handled.
Cargo Types
Major types of cargo handled were break bulk 3,725,555 tons
or 48.7%, bulk liquid 2,271,693 tons or 29.7%, dry bulk 1,094,926 tons or 14.3%
and transshipmens were 550,651 tons or 7.2%.

Containerized Traffic
The port handled 313,838 TEU’s carrying 3,120,786 tons, or
58.1 percent of the total dry cargo. Imports comprised 158,491 TEUs
while exports totaled 155,347 TEUs.
The Dar es Salaam container terminal, operated privately by
TICTS handled a total of 310,795 TEU’s or 99.0 percent of the port
container traffic, while only one percent was handled at the General
Cargo Terminal.

Bulk Liquid
Bulk liquid cargo constituted 2,271,693 tons or 29.7 percent of the total
traffic. Of these 2,169,473 tons were imports and 102,220
tons exports. This traffic is handled at two oil terminal facilities: the
Kurasini Oil Jetty (KOJ), a tanker jetty for refined products fitted with
computerised flow meters and at the Single Point Mooring (SBM) which is
exclusive for crude oil. The SBM is now beyond its economic life and plans are
on hand for its replacement in the 2007/2008 financial year.
Transit and Transshipment Traffic
Dar es Salaam, the only port which handles transit cargo.
Transit cargo handled was 2,662,147 tons or 34.8 percent of the total port
traffic. Zambia has a large share with 32.8 percent followed by Democratic
Republic of Congo 13.0 percent as shown on table below:


Shipping Traffic
The port registered a total of 2,102 ship calls which
comprised of 1,156 deep-sea vessels and 946 coasters. Deep-sea ship calls
constituted of 384 dry general cargo vessels, 623 container vessels and 149
tankers. Coastal ships constituted, 880 dry general cargo vessels while 66
Tankers vessels were coasters. The total vessels gross registered tonnage
reached 19,845,000.
Port Productivity
Productivity at the Container Terminal reached an average of
513.9 moves per 24 hours. Productivity per shift per gang at the General Cargo
Terminal was 233.8 tons, 430.5 tons and 117 units for break bulk, dry bulk and
vehicles, respectively.
TANGA PORT
General
Tanga port is the second largest sea-port with a rated
annual capacity of 500,000 tones. It is a lighterage port with 2 shallow water
berths.
The port handled a total of 460,626 tons of cargo of which
276,186 or 59.9 percent were imports and 184,440 or 40.1 percent exports.
Cargo Types
Major cargo types handled at the port were bulk liquid
113,556 tons or 24.6 percent, dry bulk 61,960 tons or 13.4 percent and break
bulk 285,110 tons or 61.8 percent.

Containerized Traffic
More general cargo is now being handled in containers. The
port handled 14,265 TEUs, carrying 193,137 tons or 39.3 percent of the total
traffic. Import containers were 7,034 TEUs carrying 95,779 tons and export
containers were 7,231 TEUs carrying 97,358 tons.
Shipping Traffic
The port handled a total of 307 ship calls out of which 154
were deep-sea and 153 coasters. Deep-sea ships comprised of 124 dry cargo
vessels and 30 tankers. Coasters were 133 dry cargo vessels and 20 tankers.
Port Productivity
Productivity for general cargo averaged 165.5 tons per gang
per shift. The average stay in port for deep-sea dry cargo ships was 1.4 days
per ship.
Passenger Traffic
The port handled a total of 10,517 passengers of whom 5,177
embarked and 5,340 disembarked.
MTWARA PORT
General
Mtwara port is designed to handle 400,000 tones. During the
review period, a total of 149,769 tons, of which 70,858 tons were imports and
78,911 tons exports. The low level of the port capacity utilization is mainly
due to low traffic which relies on seasonal traffic and inland transport of
the hinterland network. Cargo traffic handled at Mtwara is as shown in
Table No. 10 below:

Containerized Traffic
Container traffic handled was 6,609 TEUs equivalent to 73,964 tons which
is 64.2 percent of the total general cargo traffic.
Shipping Traffic
The port handled a total of 153 ship calls of which 32 were deep-sea and
121 coasters. On average, deep-sea dry ships ships stayed in the port for 1.6
days per call.
Passenger Traffic
The port recorded a total of 34,935 passengers of whom 17,370 embarked
and 17,565 disembarked.
Port Productivity
The port’s productivity was on average of 173.2 tons per gang per shift.
